What Is ASSYST Plus?
ASSYST Plus stands for Active Service System Plus. It’s Mercedes-Benz’s on-board maintenance computer, standard on most models from 2009 onward.
Unlike older vehicles that reminded you to change your oil every 3,000 miles regardless of anything else, ASSYST Plus is a dynamic system. It continuously monitors your engine and driving conditions in real time, then calculates when each specific service item is due — and tells you exactly what’s needed before your next appointment.
Think of it as your car’s personal maintenance advisor, running quietly in the background every time you drive.
How Does It Know When Service Is Due?
Rather than counting miles on a fixed clock, ASSYST Plus reads actual sensor data from your engine to understand how hard the oil and other components are working. The inputs include:
For San Antonio drivers, this matters. Summer heat on 1604, stop-and-go traffic around Loop 410, and short trips across town all put more stress on engine oil than the algorithm’s “ideal” scenario. Your ASSYST Plus will often reflect that — and it’s right to do so.
What Shows Up on the Dashboard
About a month before service is due, you’ll see a message in your instrument cluster or multifunction display:
“Next Service A in 800 miles”
“Service B Due”
“Service B1 exceeded by 340 miles”
The display gives you a live countdown in miles or days, whichever threshold is closer. Once you’ve passed the due date or mileage, it flips to show how overdue you are. The code has two parts: a letter (the service tier) and sometimes a number (additional items due at the same time). Both mean something specific.
Service A vs. Service B: The Alternating Schedule
Mercedes structures routine maintenance around two alternating service tiers, each due roughly every 10,000 miles:
Service A — ~10,000 Miles / 1 Year · Starts at $189.97
Service A is your lighter annual service. It includes: synthetic oil and filter change, fluid level checks and top-offs, tire inflation check, brake component inspection, multi-point vehicle inspection, and reset of the ASSYST Plus maintenance counter.
Service B — ~20,000 Miles / 2 Years · Starts at $389.97
Service B builds on everything in Service A and adds: cabin air filter replacement, and brake fluid exchange — one of the most important items owners skip. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air over time. That moisture lowers the fluid’s boiling point and can cause brake fade under hard stops. Mercedes specifies a brake fluid exchange every two years for exactly this reason.
After Service B, the cycle resets and you’re back to Service A. Most Mercedes owners will alternate A → B → A → B throughout the life of the vehicle.
